    Meeting #1: Introduce Determining Theme

Using The Chocolate Touch by author Patrick Skene Catling, students will learn to track the theme by identifying clues and evidence as they read. This meeting introduces a graphic organizer for students to use to track clues about the book's theme as they read.

Meeting #2: Notice the Link Between Character Traits and Theme

Noting character traits, especially flaws, is another way for readers to determine a story's theme. Students can use The Chocolate Touch to practice identifying a character's traits and related theme.

Meeting #3: Making Inferences About a Character's Feelings and How they Connect to the Theme

This The Chocolate Touch Book Club meeting focuses on examining the main character's feelings to help determine theme. Students will use the text as evidence to identify how John is feeling and what that emotion may say about the theme.

Meeting #4: Examining the Problem to Identify Theme

Author Patrick Skene Catling connects the story's theme to the main character's problem. Students will practice examining the character's problem and lessons learned to identify the story's overall theme.

Meeting #5: Connecting Changes in Character Perspective to Theme

Building on the last meeting, students will identify a change in the character's perspective based on the lesson learned. In The Chocolate Touch, the change in John's perspective on chocolate helps readers to determine theme.

    Meeting #6: Predicting Theme

As The Chocolate Touch begins to conclude, students will use their notes on the smaller themes they have identified throughout the text to make a logical prediction about the story's overall theme.

Meeting #7: Exploring the Author's Message to Identify Theme

Author Patrick Skene Catling provides clues throughout The Chocolate Touch to help readers determine the book's theme. Students will wrap up the Book Club by identifying the theme and assessing their predictions to determine if they were correct.
