Students will delight in using Dav Pilkey's Dog Man for a Book Club focused on exploring the role of illustrations in a story. This first Book Club meeting introduces graphic novels and gets readers thinking about how the author uses the illustrations to communicate important details about the setting, characters, and plot.

Using Dog Man by Dav Pilkey, students will closely examine each frame to discover more about the story's setting. Readers will pay particular attention to how the illustrations invoke all five senses; sight, sound, taste, touch, and smell.

This Dog Man Book Club meeting focuses on how author Dav Pilkey develops characters using illustrations and very few words. Readers will identify what we can learn about a character's traits and development by paying close attention to the details drawn into each frame.

In the graphic novel, Dog Man, author Dav Pilkey uses the illustrations of each crazy adventure to move the plot along. By first listening to just the words, then looking at the pictures and the words, students will discover how important the details included in the illustrations are to understanding the plot.

Students will wrap up the Dog Man Book Club by applying what they have learned about the role of illustrations in a story. As a culminating activity, students will be challenged to tell their own story using a four frame series of illustrations and limited text.

Use this six-question assessment to determine whether or not students understand the key concepts associated with the role of illustrations in a story.
