The management resources include a Book Club Calendar, conversation prompts, Student Self-Evaluation forms, Reading Response Board (with optional Common Core alignment), and an Expectations for Book Club anchor chart.

The instructional overview includes instructional background for tracking characters, instructional objectives for each of the Book Club meetings, and a list of the materials and preparation necessary to Charlotte's Web Book Club.

The first Book Club meeting for Charlotte's Web by EB White introduces the students to using a Character Map to keep track of the story's characters.

Author EB White uses both primary and secondary characters in Charlotte's Web. Students will practice distinguishing between these two types for the characters that have been introduced in the text.

Identifying the physical attributes of the characters in Charlotte's Web allows the reader to form a more complete understanding of the characters. Students will use evidence from the text to add physical traits to their Character Maps for each character.

Readers can infer what a character in Charlotte's Web thinks and feels by examining the things the character says and does. Students will add descriptions to their Character Maps by looking for evidence of each character's personality in dialogue and actions.

In Charlotte's Web, author EB White has included a lot of characters. This meeting focuses on identifying connections between characters to learn which ones are most important and how the characters effect one another.

Students will be able to find characters they like and dislike in Charlotte's Web and identify reasons for their opinion. When readers form an opinion of the characters in the story, it shows that they are comprehending what they are reading.

Students have developed detailed Character Maps of the characters author EB White included in Charlotte's Web. By paying careful attention to the details of the text, students know the characters well enough to write a biography of the character.

Use this six-question assessment to determine whether or not students understand the key concepts associated with tracking characters.
